A burning wolf sculpture during Solskin Festival 2025

Burn the wolf

31 Jul, 2025

A weekend at the second ever Solskin Festival

A journey that seemed to be taking us into the wilds of the Peak District, further and further from anything, until the map spat us out on a winding country lane, then led us to a field with a sign hanging from the gate. Live music from The Witchcraft and Vagrancy Act, Galdorcraeft, Bog Bodies and Nebala. Pagan rituals, including a ceremonial burning of a giant wooden wolf. Some dicking about with a plastic axe in a car park. Midnight baths and morning pages in the pub we stayed in down the hill.

Last month, my beloved mate Avadrian Night and I spent the weekend at Solskin Festival, not realising until we got there that it was only the second time ever the event had been produced. And – as part of this year’s attempts at teaching myself some basic video editing skills – I made this video collage of some of the highlights. (If you want, you can also check out my video diaries from my adventures earlier this year to Valencia, Jorvik Viking Festival and the Conwy Pirate Festival.)

Not included: me accidentally giving myself sunstroke after getting distracted talking to the members of The Witchcraft & Vagrancy Act and staying out in the blazing midday sun too long, followed by an exorcist-level projectile vomiting experience in a portaloo; raving to the psychedelic ceilidh that was Bog Bodies; the creepy ‘Santa Stop Here’ sign on what looked like an attic hatch above the wardrobe in my pub bedroom; Avadrian and I cracking up at many inopportune ritual moments; spiked mead conspiracy theories; midnight snacks; getting obsessed with singers who look normal then open their mouths and sound like demons.
